SUMMARY:25th Anniversary: Those Shoes
DESCRIPTION:This canvas was added to the Portfolio on February 11\, 2003. A great American film icon and a great album cover (for those who recall the 70ʼs). When executing the ruby slippers I had planned to add glitter to my paint – I ended up using five different colors and literally hundreds of different-sized dots of pigment to achieve the desired effect.

SUMMARY:25th Anniversay: First Criscuoli Website – FreedomStands.com – Launched
DESCRIPTION:From 04/20/2003 –\nLaurel\, MD – When Joseph Criscuoli returned to Norristown\, Pennsylvania after twenty-five years\, little did he know that his visit would result in the launch of a successful website featuring his painting “Freedom Stands – Valley Forge.” The 25th Reunion of the Norristown High School Class of 1977 drew Criscuoli back to his roots; a side trip with Grace\, his wife\, to the Valley Forge National Historical Park started the ball rolling. “I hadn’t seen the National Memorial Arch in twenty-five years\,” said Criscuoli\, “and I wanted to show Grace one of my favorite haunts from my high school days. I took quite a few photographs while we were touring the park\, especially of the National Memorial Arch.” After returning to his Montpelier\, MD home\, Criscuoli reviewed the photographs he had taken and began to compose a painting of the Arch. “The National Memorial Arch is our tribute to the beginnings of American freedom – dedicated to those who first established and defended our right to be free\,” said Criscuoli. \nThe painting was completed on January 3rd\, and Criscuoli had an idea that perhaps the work might have some value beyond hanging on a wall in his home. Criscuoli did some research on the internet and learned that he had actually started the painting around the time\, 225 years earlier\, when George Washington and the Continental Army marched in to Valley Forge. “It just started to feel right – with all that has happened in the last two years\, and with our troops in the field\, I thought there might be more than a few people who might want to be reminded of where the concept of freedom in this country really began.” With the help of his brother\, Stephen\, and a family friend\, Criscuoli registered the domain name www.FreedomStands.com and began developing a marketing and public relations program around the site and the painting. \nThe site provides background information on the story behind the painting\, a bio of the artist and a portfolio of other selected works as well as a way for visitors to obtain their own copy of Freedom Stands – Valley Forge. In addition to a lithographic poster\, visitors can obtain fine art re-productions and note cards featuring the painting. Criscuoli\, a Vice President for Marketing and Public Relations with a metro D.C. graphics firm\, has been painting since his days as an under-graduate at the University of Maryland. Criscuoli resides in Montpelier\, Maryland\, painting in a most unassuming corner of his home office. Freedom Stands – Valley Forge is the first of his works to be offered to the public. Says Criscuoli\, “painting is a simple exercise in tension elimination\, and acrylics are my chosen medium because they don’t require the use of solvents that smell up the house or ignite very easily.”

SUMMARY:5th Anniversary: River Valley
DESCRIPTION:This canvas was added to the Portfolio on July 9\, 2023. More than once I paid my “parental dues” and served as a Chaperone for an overnight trip sponsored by my sons’ middle-school. The days were filled with horseback riding\, a very terrifying zip line\, and a spirited reenactment of the Battle at Antietam Bridge featuring water balloons. Three meals a day? Yes\, indeed. Getting any sleep in the bunk house? Not so much. Oh\, but there’s also a very nice covered bridge\, one that crosses the South Branch of Gunpowder Falls where the Falls meet Muddy Creek not far from Prettyboy Reservoir\, on the grounds of River Valley Ranch located about 7 miles northeast of Manchester\, Maryland.

With the help of my Goddaughter\, Jennifer Reynolds\, I was able to accurately portray four of the most recognizable musical notes ever heard. SUMMARY:25th Anniversary: Montpelier Mansion – Carriage Entrance
DESCRIPTION:This canvas was added to the Portfolio on February 26\, 2004. The Montpelier Mansion\, a National Historic Landmark\, is one of the finest examples of 18th century Georgian architecture in the state of Maryland. Grace\, my wife\, hiked through a particularly massive snowfall in 2003 to get a few photos. We did not realize until after the painting had been started that she had actually photographed the rear\, or “Carriage Entrance\,” of the building. Actually\, I could not be happier with how this turned out… and the added touch of the candles in the windows was entirely Graceʼs idea.

DESCRIPTION:This canvas was added to the Portfolio on September 15\, 1979. When I was in Kindergarten\, my teacher was very concerned that I seemed to express myself during the “coloring” portion of each school day using only red and black crayons. A parent-teacher conference was scheduled. My parents were very concerned. When asked why I only used red and black crayons\, I explained that those were the only colors left in the box when it was my turn to choose.

Well\, my Mother-in-Law asked for a painting of birds. “Nothing too large”\, she said and so I selected an 18″ x 12″ canvas. Ask\, and ye shall receive! Following the background gradations that I had toyed with in the painting “Cloud”\, I expanded on that technique a bit with this canvas. I’m very pleased with the central circle and how it swirls a bit\, and it’s a nice addition to my more abstract works.

SUMMARY:5th Anniversary: Twilight
DESCRIPTION:This canvas was added to the Portfolio on December 25\, 2024. Once upon a time\, many years ago\, my Mother swam with the dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center located in Marathon\, Florida. On Christmas morning in 2024\, after the entire family had opened all of their gifts\, I presented her with this painting. While I believe that people\, in general\, should not find themselves in tears on Christmas morning\, well\, I think that she liked this gift a lot. This was a challenging composition on several counts. For instance\, I actually increased the size of the dolphin four different times before I was pleased with the final product.

SUMMARY:45th Anniversary: Scotty
DESCRIPTION:This canvas was added to the Portfolio on May 19\, 1985. A tremendous storm brought down a huge tree on our property that could easily have crushed our home – but\, luckily\, it fell away form the house and onto a large pile of firewood and thus was suspended about three feet off of the ground. My Brother and I coaxed our dog to jump up on the fallen timber and we got the photo that became the source material for this sizable canvas.
